A focus on comfort and performance

The NJ TRANSIT Multi-Level Railcars have enabled NJ TRANSIT to anticipate and meet ridership demand on its busiest rail lines, while providing an unprecedented level of comfort and performance for riders. These railcars were developed with extensive input from numerous stakeholders, and designed to meet the stringent compatibility requirements of pre-existing equipment and operating systems.

The ECCO Design team performed the crucial task of building satisfying experiences for all parties, linking desired concepts with practical feasibilities. After processing the perspectives of commuters, engineers, designers, manufacturers, and operators, ECCO Design integrated their insights into innovative solutions regarding spatial design, passenger ergonomics, aesthetics, safety, and comfort.

Increasing maneuverability

The Multi-Level Railcars’ interior design features large, tinted windows, indirect ceiling lighting, and soothing blue tones, all of which produce a restful and spacious passenger environment. Each car also offers upper and lower seating levels, where commuters will find seats in 2×2 configurations – ensuring that every seat is a window or an aisle seat. Widened aisles also facilitate passenger boarding and alighting, and make it easier for passengers and conductors to move about the train. In addition, intermediate “mezzanine” levels, at each end of the car, feature padded leaning stations and storage areas for wheelchairs, carts, strollers, bicycles, and luggage.

Essential commuter

The first Multi-Level Railcars were placed into service in 2006, on trains on the Northeast Corridor between Trenton and New York City. Since then, it quickly became an essential commuter train for people who seek productivity, reliability, and comfort in the journey between workplace and home.
